A sand candle is a candle made of granular wax — often called sand wax or candle sand — that you pour into any heat-safe vessel, top with a wick, and light. No melting, no pouring hot wax, no mould. And when it burns down, you don't throw the vessel away: you top it up with fresh sand wax and a new wick, and the candle is alive again.
That last part is the point. A sand candle is not a candle you finish. It is a vessel you keep.
How does a sand candle work?
Sand wax is wax in granular form — it looks and pours like fine sand. Because the granules take the shape of any container, you can turn a glass, a ceramic bowl or a stone vessel into a candle in about a minute:
- Pour the sand wax into a clean, heat-safe vessel.
- Level the surface and insert a wick, leaving about 5 mm above the wax.
- Light it. The flame melts only a small pool of wax around the wick — the rest stays granular.
When the wick burns out, the melted patch hardens back. Remove the used wick, stir or top up the sand, place a new wick — and light it again.
How long does a sand candle burn?
One 5 cm wick burns for up to 7–8 hours, provided the wick sits no more than 5 mm above the wax surface. A 1 kg pack comes with 10 wicks — enough for roughly 70–80 hours of burning across multiple sessions.
What is sand wax made of?
Adore Sand sand wax is a paraffin-free, plant-based wax in granular form, used with cotton wicks. The base wax is unscented — fragrance oils, composed in the UAE, are added if and how you like. Coloured versions contain dyes.
How much sand wax do I need?
Sand wax has a bulk density of about 0.51 g/cm³. As a rule of thumb: a 10 × 10 cm cylinder vessel takes about 0.4 kg; a small 8 × 8 cm vessel about 0.2 kg; a large 15 × 12 cm bowl about 1.1 kg.

Sand candle vs regular candle
- When it burns down: a regular candle is thrown away — a sand candle is refilled.
- Vessel: fixed vs any heat-safe vessel, reused for years.
- Scent: fixed vs your choice, changeable with every refill.
- Shape: fixed vs any — the sand takes the vessel's form.
- Wax needed: a whole new candle vs just a top-up of sand wax.
Can I use my own vessel?
Yes — that is half the pleasure. Glass, ceramic, stone: if it is heat-safe, it can become a candle. Many of our customers refill vessels they have had for years, or turn objects they love into candles. The vessel stays; the scent returns.
