How to Refill a Sand Candle: The Vessel Stays, the Scent Returns

Most candles end in the bin. A sand candle doesn't end at all. When the wax burns down, you refill the same vessel with fresh sand wax and a new wick — and the candle is alive again. Here is exactly how to do it, how often, and how much wax you need.

When is it time to refill?

Three signs: the wick has burned out and the wax level has dropped noticeably; the melted patch around the wick has hardened into a crater you'd rather smooth over; or you simply want a different scent for the season. There is no wrong moment — topping up a half-full vessel works just as well as refilling an empty one.

How to refill a sand candle in 4 steps

1. Remove the used wick. Once the vessel is fully cool, lift out the burnt wick stub. Any hardened wax around it can stay — it will blend into the fresh fill.
2. Top up with fresh sand wax. Pour the granules straight from the pack, level the surface with a spoon or your fingers. No melting, no heat, no mess.
3. Place a new wick. Insert it upright in the centre, leaving about 5 mm above the wax surface — this is what gives the 7–8 hour burn per 5 cm wick.
4. Light it. The flame melts only a small pool around the wick; the rest stays granular, ready for the next evening.

The whole thing takes about a minute. That is the entire maintenance schedule of a sand candle.

How much sand wax do you need?

Change the scent, keep the vessel

The base sand wax is unscented — which means every refill is a chance to start over. Add a few drops of fragrance oil, composed in the UAE, and the same vessel that smelled of sandalwood in winter can smell of fig and coconut in summer. Or keep it unscented and let it be pure flame.
