Hinoki is Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) — a slow-growing evergreen that has been Japan's most revered wood for over a thousand years. Temples and shrines are built from it, traditional bathhouses are lined with it, and its scent — clean, woody, quietly green — is one of the most recognisable in Japanese culture. What does hinoki smell like?

Fresh-cut wood, first of all — but softer than pine and less sweet than sandalwood. Hinoki sits between citrus and forest: a green, slightly lemony opening over a calm, dry woody base. It is often described as the smell of a Japanese forest after rain, or of a traditional cypress bath. It does not fill a room loudly; it settles into it.

Why is hinoki so valued in Japan?

Hinoki wood is naturally fine-grained, pale and slow to age, which made it the material of choice for Japan's most important buildings — including Horyu-ji, one of the world's oldest wooden temple complexes. The same wood lines ofuro soaking tubs in traditional bathhouses, where hot water releases the cypress aroma. Burning hinoki incense is the simplest way to bring that ritual home: no tub required.

How to burn hinoki incense

1. Place the stick upright in the ceramic holder on a heat-safe surface.
2. Light the tip, let it flame for a second or two, then gently blow it out — the stick should glow and smoke, not burn.
3. Let it burn through. Burning time varies by stick, as the length is left natural to preserve the material.

One stick is enough to scent a room; the aroma lingers after the smoke fades.
